General surgeon Dr. Paul Mace has been appointed as the Chief Medical Officer at Garden Park Medical Center, effective March 1, 2014. Mace’s functions will includes administrative liaison to the medical staff and other members of the hospital leadership team.  Priority will be given to Quality and Patient Safety, Medical Staff Services and Development, Clinical Service Line Strategy, Utilization Review, Medical Staff Satisfaction/Engagement, and Healthcare Information Technology.

Dr. Paul Mace was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1987. He received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama in 1991. Dr. Mace received his General Surgery training at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1991 to 1997. While at Tulane, Dr. Mace also trained at the nationally renowned Charity Hospital. During his final year of training, Dr. Mace was named Chief Resident of the Tulane Surgery Department for 1996-1997.

After completing his residency, Dr. Mace moved to Gulfport in 1997 to establish his private practice. He was able to utilize his extensive training and experience in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Breast Surgery, to bring the best and most up-to-date treatment to his patients on the Gulf Coast. He was Board Certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery in 1998, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, member of the American Breast Society, the Society of Laparoendoscopic surgeons, the Tulane Surgical Society, the Mississippi Medical Association, the Coast Counties Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Mace resides in Gulfport with his wife, Jennifer (a Gulfport native), and their three children. When not at the hospital, he can usually be found at a local soccer field, baseball field, football field, volleyball court, tennis court, or ballet recital enjoying his children's activities.

Other duties that Dr. Mace may incur as the Chief Medical Officer include:  Assisting other members of the administrative team and medical staff in addressing case management and utilization issues, Administratively oversee the Medical Staff Office in performance of the credentialing, bylaws and peer review functions to assure medical staff members are appropriately involved in ongoing professional practice evaluation and focused professional practice evaluation, and Administrative input into policies, plans, and strategy regarding patient care programs.
