I found a knot in my breast through self-examination and it was later confirmed that I had DCIS (pre-cancer). I trusted God and put my care in the hands of my doctors. I relied on them to provide the best treatment options for the type of cancer that I had. Everyone's diagnosis is not the same and not all breast cancer patients or survivors are candidates for the DIEP flap but, it was definitely worth looking into and I am happy that I made the decision.* My doctors were compassionate and I felt well-informed. When they explained the healing process and the additional benefits, including a tummy tuck, I said “Why not?!.” I chose to have the surgery at Garden Park and my recovery time was reasonable and well-managed. I consider myself blessed for having been given the DIEP flap as an option and for having a successful outcome.
